Malthouse’s West Coast IPA Challenge outgrows venue

2013-07-12 18.49.08One of the biggest events on the Wellington craft beer calendar, Malthouse’s West Coast IPA Challenge, is expanding due to a positive case of growing pains.

Colin Mallon, Malthouse Operations Guy and WCIPAC organiser, says this year’s 9th Annual West Coast IPA Challenge (WCIPAC) will expand its festivities to Malthouse’s sister bar, Fork & Brewer on Bond Street, due to increasingly large crowds turning up to see who will win Best West Coast IPA and take home the Golden Gumboots.

The annual event, taking place on Friday, 29 July, sees brewers showcase their skills with hops by brewing West Coast IPAs, a notoriously popular and hoppy style of beer, dear to the hearts of craft beer drinkers.

“I think it’s become such a big event on the calendar because of people’s ongoing and increasingly growing love affair with different beers,“ says Colin.

“The event has raised awareness of the beer style, and the fun and anticipation leading up to, and on, the night definitely brings people in who necessarily wouldn’t class themselves as beer drinkers. You get hardcore beer drinkers bringing their friends, and before you know it, it widens the appeal.

“The last WCIPAC had Malthouse groaning at its seams. The event officially kicks off at 2pm, the bar will be wall-to-wall packed by 4:30pm, with queues out the door by 5pm, and the bar often remaining near capacity until 2am.

“We sell something in the region of about 40 kegs. It is a huge night for us!

“We were turning people away at the last few WCIPACs, so it made sense to release some of that pressure this year by making Fork & Brewer a co-host.”

Colin says Fork & Brewer was the natural venue choice to expand the event, not only as it is Malthouse’s sister bar, but because it is the only place that had enough taps to accommodate the 25 beers that will be showcased on the evening.

Punters at Fork & Brewer need not fear for missing out on any of the beers, celebrations or announcements – all WCIPAC beers will be pouring on tap and announcements made at the same time as at Malthouse.

It speaks for the notoriety of the event, that the competition is making its first foray to Australia with a line-up of WCIPAC beers being flown over the Tasman to feature in WCIPAC tap takeovers at The Local Taphouses in Melbourne and Sydney.

2013-07-12 21.02.15Originally created because July was Malthouse’s quietest month of the year, WCIPAC started out with two entrants [Epic Brewing Co. and Hallertau Brewery] in a bit of a “my beer is hoppier than your beer” showdown.

“Back then the Wellington craft beer landscape was quite different – there was Malthouse, Bar Bodega and Bar Edward, so showcasing a specific style was quite unusual,” says Colin.

“Now the event showcases 25 beers, has 9-10 judges, some of whom are World Beer Cup judges, and breweries contacting us to submit entries.”

“It’s great when you see a brewery that hasn’t performed very well, and then come back and next year and they raise their game – even if they don’t win it’s really great to see.”

“The last thing I wanted this to be was something that was taken too seriously. We want to give brewers a bit of feedback on their entries, but at the end of the day, it is all about celebrating good beer with good people.”

Day 24 – Beers of Auckland – Funkonnay

Beers of Auckland Advent Calendar 2014
DAY 24
– Funkonnay by Hallertau

BOTTLE:  Funkonnay 13 Funkonnay
BREWED: The Beer Fountain

ABV: 6.7%
IBU: 18

I wanted to finish with something special for the Advent Calendar. Steve (Hallertau) was kind enough to give me the 2012 and 2013 Funkonnay for today. Earlier in the year I had the privilege to try the 2012 Funkonnay on tap at the Malthouse thanks to Colin keeping a keg, in his secret cellar. It was amazing. One of the best beers experiences I’ve even had in New Zealand. Colin is one of the best publicans in New Zealand, not just because he keeps back the special stuff, but because he knows what his customers want, and delivers awesomeness on a regular basis.

I’m not sure how this beer changes in the bottle over time but the 2012 has more condition, ie CO2, and acid, than 2013, which means sourness. The 2013 is easier to drink. The only thing I can say from this is that both of these beers are very good, and possibly the best sour beers I’ve had in New Zealand. I would like someone to put a better sour beer made in New Zealand, in front of me.

I believe I have drunk some of the best sour beers in the world. Brussels, Santa Rosa, San Diego. All amazing. Hallertau are on par, world-class. Maybe not the most sour, but perfect for the market here. Steve Plowman is leading the way for New Zealand. If you can get a bottle of Funkonnay then get it. Drink it, cellar it.

The Beer Advent Calendar has been tough, partly because of the time of year, with time available, and what is happening within the Epic business. Busy also because it has been hard to get around all the Auckland breweries. I’m thinking that I’ll try to get that done over the coming weeks. It’ll be fun. There are beers and breweries I did’t get to try yet.

2015, I’d like to be fun for craft beer in Auckland. It has the most potential in New Zealand. The most new customers, the most potential bars. Craft Beer + Auckland = the biggest win for beer in New Zealand in 2015.

Merry Christmas!

Happy New Year!!

See you in 2015…..

These are dark days, indeed

“I don’t like dark beers”.

Starting this Friday The Malthouse will host its annual two-day Darkest Days event.

A celebration of dark beers, some of the highlights include Epic’s biennial  stout, this year named Imperium, the always-amazing Three Boys Oyster Stout and another San Diego offering – Stone 2013 Espresso Russian Imperial Stout.

No, you won’t like them all but if you’re a dark beer virgin this is the place to start.

Craft beer is a culture, not a craze

But for all of the excitement our love affair with craft beer is still in its awkward adolescent stage, with much fumbling at clasps, enthusiastic – and sometimes clumsy – experimentation and occasional disappointment and regret. In our teenage years of beer discovery, we often find ourselves drawn to the enigmatic bad boys who will break our heart, or the hottie whose short skirt distracts us from her inability to carry a conversation, or at least their beer world equivalents.

Brewing up a storm at new beer festival

Eckhard says the event aims to showcase home brewing and 10 home brewers from the Nelson Tasman region will have their beer at the celebration – (wow, slow news day Nelson?)

GREG KOCH – Owns Wellington, NZ in #citytaptakeover

Greg Koch from Stone Brewing Co. visited Wellington on Thursday, in a style you would only ever expect from him.

2014-03-13 17.02.29

It was a #citytaptakeover . Too many beers for just one bar to carry. So the event was spread over two bars, on either side of the city – Malthouse and Fork & Brewer. 45 beers, 50 taps. The event started at 12:12pm and there was a steady stream of people from lunchtime through the afternoon.

Matt ParrotDog & Greg Koch

Greg turned up around 5pm at the Malthouse and we headed to the Fork & Brewer for some meet and greet time with the after work crowd. I have never seen the Fork as packed as it was when we arrived. For someone who’s beer isn’t available for sale or has never done a beer event in New Zealand, he was treated like a local hero. He walk through the crowd talking with beer fans, stopping to chat, shake hands and have his photo taken.

Jos Garage Project

After a couple of hours we departed for some dinner. We went across the road to WBC and had a really nice dinner, where we said just bring us a selection from the menu so we can try. Jos from Garage Project (and his mum) joined us, as we bumped into them on the way out of the Fork & Brewer.

Then to the Malthouse. The place was jam-packed. I gave some attention to the playlist and the place was rocking. After a while Greg mounted the bar and gave a preach (see video above). It was a roaring success, the speech and the rest of the night.

Here are a few of the stunners from the line up. I did spend the afternoon having a wee taste of each of the beers, but there were several favourites for me.

Overall I’d say everyone was very happy with this event. #citytaptakeover

P.S. I was given some feedback about the Great Kiwi Beer Festival on the 29th March in Christchurch. Since the announcement of Greg Koch and Stone Brewing Co. beers being at the event they have seen a surge in ticket sales.

EPIC CAROLINA – Wellington Release

Auckland Airport

THURSDAY 6th March

Thursday was Culley’s Epic Hot Wing Eating Competition at the Malthouse in Wellington, as well as a beautiful morning for taking a flight.

Stone Brewing Co Beer Arrives

Once inside the door, we were surprised to see the front half of the bar filled with 20 litre kegs from Stone Brewing Co. So many different types of Stone beer. It was all the beer for next the City Tap Takeover next Thursday 13th. As well as the beer for the Epic / Stone stand at the Great Kiwi Beer Festival in Christchurch on the 29th March.

Hot and Sweaty Beer Tap Badge We were ready for a hot and steamy time. There were 17 people willing to enter the competition of eating really really hot wings covered in Culley’s Carolina Reaper Hot Sauce. Half the crowd didn’t make it to the second round. Second round took another big toll on entrants. The final round it came down to a couple of guys who were dealing with the extreme pain.

Check out the final round in the video below…

FRIDAY 7th March

Do you like it hot - Skysports Grill

The following day we did another Epic Culley’s Carolina event at Skysports Grill. This was a little more low-key which suited the location. It was still a bit of fun.

For $25 you got a pint of Epic Carolina, and 1kg of chicken wings which you could add the Culley’s Carolina Reaper hot sauce to.

1kg of Hot Wings and a beer for $25

It was worked out pretty quickly that a 1kg of hot wings was alot. So groups of people were only buying one bowl between a group. Which was a good move as most people could only eat one hot wing with the Carolina Reaper sauce as it was too hot for them.

SkySports Grill even busted out a final keg of Hop Zombie which added to the attraction of the evening. Not sure how well the Zombie went with the hot sauce. I think it made the hot sauce even hotter.

Friday was a pretty impressive day for Auckland #CraftBeer as there were also two other special events on. Galbraith’s Alehouse had a new beer release, and Brothers Beer had an IPA special on. Therefore if you were a #CraftBeer fan, you had some tough choices to make.

GREAT KIWI BEER FEST 2014 – Stone Brewing Co. & Greg Koch

Thought it would be time to let people know a little more, so you have a chance to get tickets for the Great Kiwi Beer Festival (and flights if you are out-of-town).

Stone BrewingGreg Koch from Stone Brewing Co. is in New Zealand on holiday (sabbatical), taking a break, rebooting, but he has made himself and his beers available at a couple of events here in NZ.

Next Thursday there is the amazing 50 tap Wellington City Takeover (there are tap takeovers and then city takeovers, only Stone could do this). The Stone beers are going to be split between The Malthouse and the Fork & Brewer. When the special beers (they will all be special, as they are fresh and direct from the brewer in San Diego), rare beers then, will be announced via social media, so you know which location they are at. (See you next week Wellington, there is no way I’m missing this)

Check out this article just posted about Stone Brewing Co. & Greg Koch in New Zealand by The Beerhive’s Shane Cowlishaw – A beer blitzkrieg

The article gives a little background into how this all came about.

Here are the beers that will be on the Epic / Stone stall at the Great Kiwi Beer Fest (plus Greg Koch and myself). I’m sure there will be a beer for everyone to enjoy.

NZ BEER FESTIVAL SEASON – Looking forward, not back

Rather than doing a wrap up for February (you can look back over the posts here) I am doing a look forward for the coming month. Luke on a plane

I’m sure there will be other things I do, and other things that are on that I could attend if I had the time, but this should be enough. Still have to fit in the everyday other stuff, plus some sleep. Maybe a link to Air New Zealand here would be good since I am going on 8 flights this month. (maybe even make a wish to the @AirNZFairy )

February 2014
There are a few additional things from last month…

  • I made the big move from Blogger to WordPress which took a few days to get setup and working. The one small issue with that is the first few weeks of posts now have slightly different URL’s than what I have post out in the wild so my link backs won’t be working. (Working on it).

Michael Donaldson - SST – NZ’s beer style – Michael Donaldson also wrote about this in his column in the Sunday Star Times

  • Regarding training of bar staff which I pointed to in this post, I found out that an off flavours training was held last weekend. Here is a great write-up about it, but wished I knew earlier about it, so more people could have attended. Maybe something that could be repeated for interested bar staff/owners? I’ve been told that you would have been notified if you were part of this online community.

  • If you made it this far, then you might be enjoying my posts. I have been adding posts without notifications or sharing on social media. So if you want them all, please make sure you add your email address to subscribe (top of right hand column).

  • Please comment on posts if you have an opinion, or send me an email if you have a suggestion for a post or information you would like me to expand on.

Cheers
Luke
