An industry-wide trend towards increased sales of “premium” beer has presented a dilemma for brewers, including Lion.

While the higher margins it makes on sales of beers like Stella Artois are attractive, they come at the expense of falling sales of high volume “mainstream” labels such as Lion Red.

The news that sales of Lion Red are declining is brilliant.On a visit to NZ a couple of years ago I couldn’t believe that a country with such a wonderful assortment of small breweries could produce a beer so mind bogglingly bland that it would make Toohey’s New, XXXX and even VB seem remotely interesting.
